Carrying
Capacity
Assessment
Increasingly the issue of carrying capacity is becoming a major concern in the tourism industry. Carrying capacity affects every destination whether at the national and city scale or resort and individual tourist site levels. Because of the complexity of the tourism market and its varied impact on a destination, the numerical assessment of visitor numbers is by itself no longer regarded as valid for carrying capacity assessment. Jorth Consult has extensive experience from national level through to site level capacity assessment using established evidence based methodologies. These methodologies include adoption of UNWTO indicators into the process thereby providing the basis for developing sustainable resource based tourism management plans.

Urban public spaces for recreation are now central to achieving green liveable cities for the future, with six out of ten people in the world living in cities by the end of this decade, improving and creating urban recreation space that fulfils the health and recreation needs of both city residents and visitors has become central to urban planning considerations. Jorth Consult's experience of planning and providing for urban green and blue infrastructure goes back forty years having been at the forefront of the ‘new urbanism’ movement to create green sustainable cities and urban spaces within the public realm. Within the company, there is extensive wide ranging experience, from the design of public parks and botanic gardens, improving connectivity by planning green infrastructure networks, non-motorised routes and recreation greenways, urban forests and wetland design and restoration through to greening sidewalks and improving urban drainage by establishing sponge parks and bioretention swales.

Placemaking actions shape the image and imaginability of a destination. Every flourishing tourist destination comprises a mix of tangible elements such as historic city buildings or natural area plants and animals and intangible elements such as culture, history, traditional stories enhanced by the visitor’s imagination. Together these form the basis of the ‘vacation-scape’. By drawing on landscape planning, interpretation and urban design background, Jorth Consult can offer the range of skills required to assist our clients in creating unique and memorable visitor places and experiences whether in the urban or rural environments.
